Who’s it for…
From 1st class to 6th Class.
Where…
Around the school grounds or local area (town or rural) and in the classroom or at a nature site of your closing (we can recommend sites if that helps).
Duration…
Half day or full day.
What the day entails…
Powerpoint presentation called birds in the four seasons. This is a great insight into the fascinating lives of our native birds. Pupils discover about the make up of birds through examination in the classroom of stuffed birds, eggs and nests. This is followed by outdoor exploration of surrounding habitats and their suitability to different types of birds. In spring, nest material is gathered and students make their own nests to place around their school. In autumn or winter bird feeders are made by the students and placed in the right places around the school. If the full day option has been picked for a class they will study one particular bird of their choice through books and information provided and create their own ‘species profile’ book.
What the teacher needs to do…
Ask the pupils to think about what birds they have seen in the area. Ask them to engage their parents/family to see what bird knowledge can be gleaned from home. There will be an option of creating bird profile books by the students or a larger classroom display if required. Please ask pupils to bring in suitable footwear and outdoor clothing as well as anything bird related they might have at home.
