What the day entails…
Walk and talk through a blanket bog site. Plants are identified and surveyed. Their unique adaptations to the bogs challenging growing conditions are explored. Local folklore is treaded throughout the day, the old uses of some of the bog plants is discussed. Pond dipping and identification of typical bog insects such as dragonlfy larvae and water beetles. The role of moss in the bog structure and as flood prevention is explored. The animals that live on the bog are discussed, tracks and signs are found and explored. The unique structure or layers of the bog are examined. If time allows a 3D poster of the layers of the bog are created by the pupils.
What the teacher needs to do…
Discuss the make up of a bog, the layers and what makes it different from a garden or forest. Talk about the different animals that use the bog. For older classes discuss the role of a bog as an eco-service, such as carbon capture and flood prevention.
