Who’s it for…

From 2nd class to 6th Class

Where…

In class and at the local freshwater habitat (river or lake)

What the day entails…

Introduction to rivers, freshwater, its uses globally and locally.  Exploration of the importance of clean water, how that comes about and the significance of riverside or riparian habitat.  Outdoor exploration of the river banks, dipping for bugs and identifying bugs in the river.  Assessing the water quality back in the classroom by working out the numbers of bugs and their rating with either clean water requirements or pollution tolerance.  (Most freshwater bugs have a pollution tolerance rating).

This session can include a ‘source to sea’ project which entails travelling to different parts of the river and creating a project with the findings at each site.  Please contact 0868123019 for further details.

What the teacher needs to do…

Preparatory discussions on river and lake systems, how they work and what significance they have in our lives.  Wellie boots and rain gear are essential for this session.
